MASSAGE & MYOFASCIAL RELEASE (MFR)
Massage
Therapeutic massage enhances the body’s natural ability to heal. Since stress is so prevalent today, it is essential for the mind-body to have the opportunity to release and connect on a deep plane. Rebecca has witnessed many transformations as a result of massage and myofascial release in herself and in others.
The John F. Barnes Method of Myofascial Release
What is Fascia?
Fascia is a tough connective tissue which spreads in a three dimensional web from head to foot without interruption. The fascia surrounds every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel and organ of the body, all the way down to the the cellular level. Therefore, malfunction of the fascial system due to trauma, posture, or inflammation can create a binding down of the fascia, resulting in abnormal pressure on nerves, muscles, bones, or organs. This can create pain or malfunction throughout the body, sometimes with bizarre side effects and seemingly unrelated symptoms, not always following dermatomal zones. It is thought that an extremely high percentage of people suffering with pain and/or lack of motion may be having fascial problems; but most go undiagnosed, as the importance of fascia is just now being recognized. All of the standard tests, such as x-rays, mylelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc., do not show the fascial restrictions (see "Missing Link", by J.F.Barnes). What is JFB-Myofascial Release?
In JFB-MFR, the therapist will begin with an evaluation in respect to range of motion and postural analysis. A treatment will consist of sustained holding pressure at the site of restriction. Due to the nature of fascia, the symptom (i.e., pain, discomfort, etc.) may be located in an entirely different place than the restriction. Thus the whole body is addressed following the fascial voice from barrier to barrier. Through this process the body may physically unwind, moving through areas of past trauma or holding patterns, giving the subconscious and conscious the ability to feel and let go. Once the fascial restriction is released, one may feel better range of motion, improved posture, and overall better health.
What should I wear?
Please come with a pair of loose fitting shorts. Ladies can wear a bathing suit top, bra, sports bra or a tank top. As this method allows for stretching and movement, a top sheet is not always used. Please avoid using lotions on any part of the body before your appointment. JFB-MFR technique does not use lotions and can hinder the connection between your therapist and your fascia system.
